2011 3D Creative Arts AwardsBy Jennifer Davis

On the 9th of February, Planar (Runco’s parent company) helped put on the 2nd annual 3D Creative Arts Awards associated with the International 3D Society, the first award show to be shot in full stereoscopic 3D. The event was held at the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard (the theater is a celebrity unto itself) and was attended by leading studio executives and celebrities. The attractive Lumiere awards, made by the same folks who manufactured the Oscars, were given to recognize leading 3D innovation from The Walt Disney Studios, DreamWorks Animation, Pixar, IMAX, Sony Imageworks, AEG Live, Walden Media/20th Century Fox, BSkyB, Guitar Center on DirecTV, Activision/Blizzard, and a variety of individuals.

Lenny Lipton - Lifetime Achievement AwardJames Cameron, from Lightstorm Entertainment, won the coveted Harold Lloyd Award, named after the famed Hollywood director, which was accepted by Jon Landau, who then awarded Lenny Lipton the Lifetime Achievement award for his critical role in the invention of key 3D technologies. And if 100 patents weren’t enough, Lipton also wrote the song “Puff the Magic Dragon” (no, I am not kidding).

Jay Baruchel, the voice of “Hiccup” in the award-winning and box-office smash from DreamWorks Animation, “How to Train Your Dragon” was given a 3D Talent Award (that movie also has the distinction of being my son’s favorite movie). Queen guitarist, Brian May, accepted the award for BSkyB for their show “Dance Dance Dance” and joked that he got the honor as the “token Brit” in the audience. The whole show was hosted by Tom Cavanaugh who voiced the lovable Yogi Bear (alongside Justin Timberlake’s “Boo Boo”) in the recent 3D movie.

But enough of the news, the experience of being at the award show was thrilling. As the official projector of the awards, we got a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of a historic event of this scale.

Catherine Owens at 3D Creative Arts AwardsThe red carpet was shining bright outside the theater (in the balmy 70 degree weather) and inside the studio it was clear to everyone that 2010 was a turning point for the production of 3D content. I saw Janna Robinson, who is hosting the new reality TV show, Hollywood Hi-Tech on the DIY Network. It was great to meet Charlotte Huggins, the producer of Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Catherine Owens, who is currently shooting a 3D documentary in India (of which we got a sneak preview) and who produced U2’s famous 3D concert, a clip of which opened the show. The whole scientific and technical community, including leading 3D researcher, Dr. Jim Sheedy, were there for the pre-show education. Throughout the event we were posting pictures and updates. There was so much going on and clearly a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about 3D and what the future holds!

I am really looking forward to the telecast special on 3Net, the first 3D entertainment network which just launched on DirecTV, which is a joint venture of Sony Corporation, Discovery Communications, and IMAX Corporation. I am sure once the talented producers finish their work, the two-hour special will really capture the magic of the evening. I really do hope it includes the exclusive clips and never-seen-before footage in 3D that was part of the awards show. And naturally, I can’t wait to see this on our own award-winning Runco 3Dimension D-73d projector. It might be that seeing it in high-quality 3D might be even better than being there live!
