The Benefits of Front Projection

#1: The Big Screen Experience

Home theater enthusiasts have known for decades how impressive front projection entertainment systems can be. They are the dominant technology in commercial cinemas for good reasons and many of these translate into residential applications.

So, why consider projection for your home?

The first benefit is that you can create a big screen experience at home. While plasma displays top out at around 150” and single LCD TVs over 70” are rare, projection systems are virtually unlimited in size and at a lower cost per square foot of display. You can create screens measured not in inches diagonal, but in feet or meters wide, which translates into more compelling entertainment.

#2: Design Flexibility

The second reason to consider front projection in the home is that it fits your lifestyle and blends seamlessly with your décor. You can hide the electronics away and with a touch of a button bring a home theater to life, without having to leave the room.

There is also no thinner flat panel display than a front projection screen. Projectors are available in a wide range of sizes, industrial design styles, and personalization that allow the product to be customized to the homeowner’s personality and passions.

#3: Unmatched Image Performance

From color performance to black levels, in the right environment, projection dominates.Plus, you are not limited to a fixed aspect ratio of 16:9 high definition (which is a 1.781 aspect ratio). You can watch CinemaScope2.35:1 content without black bars using Runco’s CineWide® and CineGlide™ technology.

#4: 3D Done Right

The market excitement around 3D in the home is palpable and there is no better way to watch 3D than with projection. The big screen experience is more immersive and it enables Runco’s Constant Stereoscopic Video™ (CSV) with battery-free passive glasses for the best-in-class 3D performance.

#5: Energy Efficiency

Using power-consumption-per-square-inch calculations, projectors use a fraction of the energy of large flat panel displays. This is especially true of Runco’s InfiniLight™ lamplessLED illumination (available on the QuantumColor™ series and the 3Dimension™ D-73d).

Why doesn’t everyone have a theater?

First off, projection is seen as relatively complicated (as opposed to a buy-and-hang flat panel display, which is often a do-it-yourself project for the homeowner). This leads to people believing it to be wildly expensive, overly complex, or not even considering it as a possibility at all.

The second reason is people associate projectors with dark, cave-like rooms that can only be used for movie watching. Sometimes space, room size, or ceiling height limitations can make homeowners believe that projection will never work for them.

Once the homeowner considers projection, then the real work begins of making it work for their room.

Projection only works when the light on the screen is brighter than the brightness of the room. In other words, the “blackest” blacks of the scenes you show, will only be as dark as the screen before you turn on the projector and in many bright rooms that is simply not dark enough for acceptable viewing. Make no mistake, projection is not the best solution for every room.

Outsmarting the Sun

While the industry standards for theater brightness call for approximately 14 foot lamberts (fL) of luminance off the screen, the sun delivers a whopping 10,000 fL!

One of the ways to beat the sun and create incredible visual experiences in the home is with a flex-theater. When you can’t dedicate the space or the budget for a dedicated home theater, a flexible design that accommodates multiple uses of a single space can be a perfect compromise. A projection system combined with modular furniture and lighting control can transform a living room into a theater back into an entertainment space with a simple tap on a touchscreen.

Toxic 3D

Toxic 3DHave you been poisoned by bad 3D? The headaches, nausea, dizziness and eye fatigue that often accompanies 3D viewing on popular 3D TVs or 3D projectors are symptoms of poisoning. It is in fact your body recognizing something toxic and reacting appropriately. Your body is designed to react this way. Your body thinks bad 3D is poisonous.

Alternatively, your body is built to view 3D. With the exception of a small percentage of the population with significant vision issues (serious astigmatism or brain damage for instance), most of us can perceive depth. This ability allows us to walk, drive cars or bikes, play sports, and maintain a safe distance from walls and other hazards. Depth perception is a safety feature and a lifestyle enabler of the human anatomy and is wondrous thing.

3D projection done right works with your body, not against it to create compelling 3D. See our previous post about our Constant Stereoscopic Video™ (CSV) 3D approach in our 3Dimension™ Series of products, including the Runco D-73d 3D projector, which was recognized as the CEDIA New Product of the Year and the CE PRO Best Product of the Year.

Passion You Can See

As you may have heard, the new Runco 3Dimension D-73d is taking the world by storm. It is 3D done right!

One of the things that people love about this set-up is the glasses options. If you must have them, they should be fantastic! This is where our passion for exceptional video quality and incomparable visual experiences is clearly evident.

We bring people together, in a truly individualistic way with our range of PreciseLight™ glasses offerings, which include the following alternatives. Each utilizes battery-free passive technology and is a Runco exclusive!

Standard: 6 come in the box and sets of 6 are available at a reasonable price. These glasses are a unique formulation of linear polarization designed for precise stereo separation, unlike anything else available on the marketplace. They are tuned to match the left and right eye filters on the projector itself and to work with a PISCES-rated polarization-preservation screen.

Clip-Ons: For the clients who wear prescription glasses (and those who don’t), our clip-ons are a great option. They are relatively inexpensive and easy to have on hand next time you have a movie night or want to show the big game to your friends.

Children’s size: When I took my young son to his first 3D movie, I was really disappointed that they didn’t offer child-size glasses. The poor kid spent the whole time on the edge of his seat (because otherwise the theater chair would have folded up on him) and held his glasses onto his face with his finger on the bridge of his nose. Not a great viewing experience, I would say. Now, your children, grandchildren, and friends will have a “better than cinema” experience in your home with glasses built for their faces.

Premium: Our premium glasses are metal-rimmed and finished in a shade of titanium. They have the European styling of sunglasses, but feature our premium polarization, which not only uses our proprietary polarization formulation, but also features a unique alignment that compensates for the curve of the glasses in the frame for even higher quality performance.

Prescription: Our own Runco Rx offering is coming in 2011! This special order offering will customize a pair of premium glasses to your unique prescription for corrective lenses.

I would be remiss to remind you that none of these options are even possible in Active 3D, where the industry standards and Runco’s own offering takes batteries, is a bit bulkier one-size-fits-all (over the top of your other glasses and too big for a child’s face), and doesn’t allow for the personalization for style or corrective lenses.

But why should we provide more options than the 3D TV makers that are investing millions in advertising? Why should we allow for customization when it is easier to have one kind of glasses on the shelf in the warehouse? Why? Because we are passionate about our customers and the entertainment experiences they have in their homes! The PreciseLight glasses offering is industry-leading and our hand-crafted approach to video is evident even in the small details of our systems. That is what passion is all about!
