The Architecture of Eames and Vistage Veil
Friday, April 22, 2011April 22, 2011
Husband and wife design duo Charles and Ray Eames are listed among the most influential designers of the 20th century, with simultaneous and significant contributors to the worlds of architecture, furniture, and textile design. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art, married, and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where they designed the famous Case Study House #8, which also served as their home and studio, as well as the iconic Eames® Chair.
They extended their interest and skill in photography into film-making, creating eighty-five short films ranging in subjects from tops to the world of Franklin and Jefferson, from simple sea creates to the explanation of mathematical and scientific concepts. Twenty-five have been named into the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress.
According to fans, they “created a world of joy, innovation, and sheer excitement.” Theirs remains a strong voice in modern design. They even have commemorative US Postage stamps in their honor. In 1937, Ray wrote, “Modern architecture – not a style. A philosophy of life.”
But I ran across one of their lesser-known design, a prefab home prototype created with Kwikset Lock Company that reminds me of some design work that Runco has done recently. The curve of the roof of this house is reminiscent of the curve of an optional veil accessory on the back of our new Vistage™ flat panel by Runco. The same graceful, clean lines. I could see a Vistage panel feeling quite at home in an Eames-designed home, with homeowners kicking back in an Eames lounge chair watching the films of Eames!
